Congrats on a PR in Canada!
There are various ways to get a PR so each case varies. This post is specifically for someone who receives a PR after a work permit.
Update your SIN (Social Insurance Number)
I assume that your SIN starting with ‘9’ which means that it’s a temporary SIN with the expiry date.
Especially, if you have been working with a work permit, you want to update your SIN with a PR as soon as possible because your SIN will be different after a PR.
Go to Service Canada and update your SIN with a PR card or eCoPR (if you haven’t received a PR card yet) and let your company know your new SIN so that they can do proper tax for you.
Update your Health Card
I am in Ontario, so health care is called OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). Depending on your employment, you might already have OHIP or not.
- If you already have one — update with your PR card or eCoPR; it will update the expiry date based on your PR status
- If you haven’t got one yet — Register OHIP so you can get the public health care in Canada
Update CRA information with your new SIN
Taking care of annual tax is important.
Since you got the new SIN, your CRA account should be updated with the new SIN accordingly as well. Once you try to update your CRA with a new SIN, they will mail a passcode to verify. Then you can do your tax without any issue for the future.
